Climate action and emissions reduction
Victoria’s water sector is working to protect the state’s water resources from the impacts of climate change, reducing its greenhouse gas emissions to be net-zero by 2035. Water corporations will run on 100% renewable energy sources by 2025.
Traditional owner self-determination
The Victorian Government is committed to Aboriginal self-determination and will begin formal treaty negotiations in 2023.
Water is Life: Traditional Owner Access to Water Roadmap establishes a pathway to increasing Traditional Owner self-determination and decision-making. Water entities are working with Traditional Owners to support their aspirations to heal Country through participating in water management.
Gender equality
59% of members and directors of water entity boards are women, and at least 50% of all new appointments to boards must be women.
The Victorian Government wants to increase diversity on water sector boards to encourage new ideas and reflect the rich diversity of the Victorian community.

Water Corporations
Victoria's 18 water corporations provide a range of services to customers and communities across the state.
They supply drinking and recycled water; remove and treat sewage and trade waste; deliver water for irrigation, domestic and stock purposes; and mitigate drainage and salinity.
Water corporations operate and maintain infrastructure that enables them to perform their responsibilities, including treatment plants, pumping stations, pipes, channels, reservoirs, dams, gates and meters.
Catchment Management Authorities
Catchment Management Authorities are responsible for the integrated planning and coordination of land, water and biodiversity management in each catchment and land protection region.
This includes preparing, coordinating, and monitoring the implementation of regional catchment strategies; advising the Minister on priorities for catchment management and on the condition of land and water resources; and promoting community awareness and understanding of the importance of land and water resources, their sustainable use, conservation, and rehabilitation.
The Victorian Environmental Water Holder (VEWH)
The VEWH is an independent statutory authority responsible for holding and managing Victoria’s environmental water entitlements (the Water Holdings).
Reporting to the Minister for Water, the VEWH will make decisions on the most effective use of the Water Holdings, including use, trade, and carryover, to improve the environmental health of rivers, wetlands, and floodplains.
